MULTIVERSE: Mining Collective Data Science Knowledge from Code on the Web to Suggest Alternative Analysis Approaches

Merrill, Mike A. and Zhang, Ge and Althoff, Tim
KDD 2021

Data analyses are based on a series of “decision points” including data filtering, feature operationalization and selection, model specification, and parametric assumptions. In this work we mine Kaggle for hundreds of thousands of decision points and train a novel language model to suggest alternative analyses.

Towards Facilitating Empathic Conversations in Online Mental Health Support: A Reinforcement Learning Approach

Sharma, Ashish and Lin, Inna W and Miner, Adam S and Atkins, David C and Althoff, Tim
WWW 2021

Access to mental health care is a global challenge that online peer support platforms like TalkLife can help mitigate. Millions of people seek and provide support online but they struggle to have effective conversations. In this paper, we work towards improving empathy in online mental health support conversations. We introduce empathic rewriting, a new task for transforming low-empathy conversations to higher empathy. We propose PARTNER, a deep reinforcement learning agent that learns to make sentence-level edits to conversations in order to increase the expressed level of empathy while maintaining conversation quality through specificity, fluency, and diversity.

Population-Scale Study of Human Needs During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Analysis and Implications

Jina Suh and Eric Horvitz and Ryen W. White and Tim Althoff
WSDM 2021

The COVID-19 pandemic has fundamentally changed our lives beyond just our physical health. To understand the impact of the pandemic and associated policy decisions on a multitude of human needs, we propose a computational methodology, building on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, that can capture a holistic view of relative changes in needs following the pandemic through a difference-in-differences approach that corrects for seasonality and volume variations. When applied to over 35 billion search interactions spanning over 36000 ZIP codes in the US, we found that the expression of basic human needs has increased exponentially while higher-level aspirations declined, that the durations of shelter-in-place mandates significantly impacted social-emotional needs, and that there are potential barriers to meeting critical needs online.
